READ: The Award Speech
Thank you, Mayor Goodmanson and Council Members.
Tonight, we have the privilege of formally recognizing a truly exceptional individual – someone whose tireless dedication and generosity have left a lasting mark on our community – someone who never seeks the spotlight, but whose impact is impossible to overlook. That person is Brad Aschenbrenner.
The King Charles III Coronation Medal is awarded to individuals whose outstanding contributions make a difference – not only in their communities, but also in a way that brings honour to Canada. This medal is particularly special at this moment in our history, as Canadians are embracing a renewed and strengthened sense of purpose. It reminds us that the strength of our country lies in the everyday heroes who go above and beyond, to lift others up.
And for us at BGC South Vancouver Island, Brad is one of our heroes!
At BGC South Vancouver Island, we believe that Opportunity Changes Everything – and that is exactly what Brad provides.
Brad is a relentless champion for young people. He works behind the scenes, never seeking recognition, ensuring that kids have opportunities to thrive, build confidence, and create a foundation for their future. He understands that youth need positive connections, experiences and a strong foundation to build their futures. As Brad so powerfully put it:
“If our kids don’t have a great foundation leading off, they have nothing to reach back to when they hit bottom.”
And Brad has dedicated himself to making sure that foundation exists.
Through the Sarah Beckett Memorial Run, Brad has channeled critical support into BGC South Vancouver Island’s youth outreach programs, allowing our teams to be on the ground, meeting young people where they are and stepping in when no one else is there for them. His commitment means that youth who are struggling – who may have no other support systems -are connected with mentors, resources and pathways to futures with possibilities.
Through the Sarah Beckett Memorial Run, Brad has created more than just an event—it is a movement that brings people together in the spirit of giving, healthy living and community support. He understands that not every child has the same opportunities, and he has made it his mission to break down barriers and create access where none existed before.
Brad is deeply involved in youth sports, not just as a coach but as a mentor, helping young athletes develop resilience, teamwork and life skills that extend far beyond the game. Perhaps what is most extraordinary about Brad is that he sees the whole person – not just the athlete, not just the youth in need, but the individual behind the story. He seeks out those who are struggling, whether they’re kids or adults and offers his support without hesitation or expectation. He listens. He takes action. And he makes sure that no one is left behind.
His compassion is boundless, his drive unwavering.
Brad is constantly building connections and opening doors for youth in our BGC South Vancouver Island programs and in the wider community – ensuring they have access to pro-social recreational activities and experiences that help them grow, learn, build resilience and develop critical life skills. Whether it’s baseball, soccer, hockey, or simply introducing kids to new opportunities, Brad understands the power of connection and community in shaping a young person’s future.
Brad is a bridge builder, forging connections and partnerships that strengthen local businesses’ commitment to youth and inspiring greater community support. He is working to create more accessible sports facilities in Westshore, ensuring that every child—no matter their circumstances—has a place to feel welcome, play, belong, and grow.
And this is what makes Brad truly exceptional – he doesn’t just fundraise or volunteer, he sees opportunity and finds a way to connect young people in need with those who can help! He recognizes the potential in every child and works to ensure they have the chance to thrive.
And Brad does all of this with fierce purpose, quiet determination and without seeking recognition.
Brad, your work is not just about the present – it is shaping the future of this community.
You have often spoken about how deeply Sarah loved her community and how much she gave to it.
You once said:
“It is not just me and the boys who lost Sarah, it was the community that did.
She did a lot. She touched a lot of lives.”
Brad, through your work, you are carrying forward that same spirit. You are ensuring that young people have the support, encouragement, and opportunity to build strong, healthy lives – just as Sarah dedicated herself to making this community stronger and safer.
At the Sarah Beckett Memorial Playground, a plaque reads: “Constable Sarah Beckett – A life that made a difference.”
Brad, your life is making a difference – every – single – day. Your unwavering commitment and selflessness are transforming lives and strengthening this community.
And tonight, BGC South Vancouver Island, countless youth, whose lives are forever changed because of you, your community and your country, honor you – not only for the remarkable way you have carried forward Sarah’s legacy, but for the incredible legacy of your own that you are building.
Brad, it is my great honor to present you with the King Charles III Coronation Medal – a well-deserved recognition for an extraordinary individual.
BGC South Vancouver Island is proud to announce that Brad Aschenbrenner has been awarded the prestigious King Charles III Coronation Medal. This incredible honour recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities, embodying values of service, sustainability, and diversity. Brad’s unwavering dedication to supporting BGC South Vancouver Island through the Sarah Beckett Memorial Run and youth advocacy has transformed the lives of local youth, making him a deserving recipient of this distinction.
The King Charles III Coronation Medal was established to celebrate those who have had a meaningful impact on their country, province, or community. In May 2023, the Prime Minister announced that 30,000 Coronation Medals would be awarded to Canadians whose service and achievements bring honour to our nation.
When BGC Canada invited all 80 Clubs across Canada to nominate one person who has made a significant contribution to their organization to receive one of the 36 medals to be awarded, Brad Aschenbrenner was our unanimous choice.
Brad started the Sarah Beckett Memorial Run to honour his wife, Cst. Sarah Beckett, a 32 year old mountie and mother of two young sons who died tragically after her marked Police vehicle was struck by a drunk driver early in the morning on April 5, 2016 in Langford, BC.
Sarah grew up in Victoria BC, graduating from Spectrum Community School and joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 2005. Sarah was a dedicated Police Officer who worked hard to make a difference in every community she worked in. Even more, she was a wonderful mother, wife, daughter, sister, coworker and friend.
Brad continues to honour Sarah’s passion for children and youth through the Sarah Beckett Memorial Run. This 5km and 3km family run and walk raises money for local non-profit organizations in the Western Communities in southern Vancouver Island to honour her memory and selected BGC South Vancouver Island youth to benefit from the proceeds raised from the annual event.
Brad’s journey with BGC South Vancouver Island began in 2019 and his impact on youth in our Community Youth Intervention program has been immeasurable. He has been instrumental in the success of vulnerable youth getting access to community experiences that help them envision opportunity and possibilities for a brighter future.
Never one to seek the spotlight, he remains a humble, steadfast advocate for youth, ensuring they have the support, guidance, and opportunities they need to thrive. His ability to inspire and uplift those around him is creating a lasting legacy at BGC South Vancouver Island.
Many individuals who have participated in the Sarah Beckett Memorial Run under Brad’s guidance have supported his passion for the work our organization undertakes by donating tickets, lessons, outings for youth Impacted by poverty. His dedication and commitment have made a profound impact on our community, and we are thrilled to see him receive the recognition he so rightly deserves.
Congratulations, Brad on this outstanding achievement! Your contributions to BGC South Vancouver Island and the lives of young people will be celebrated for years to come.
