James’ Story
At 12 years old, James’ life spiraled into chaos. Raised by a single mother struggling with mental health challenges, he found himself bouncing between foster homes, battling addiction, and running into trouble with the law. His early teens were marked by homelessness, shoplifting, and multiple arrests. Despite interventions, he continued down a dangerous path, trapped in a cycle of crime and substance abuse.
It wasn’t until he encountered BGC South Vancouver Island programs that James began to see a way out. Through our consistent support and compassionate mentors, James experienced a glimpse of hope. He participated in the Coastline Challenges program, which pushed him physically and mentally, ultimately helping him develop resilience. Although it took multiple attempts, the persistence of BGC staff never wavered.
The turning point in James’ life came during his time in open custody at age 16. Reflecting on his destructive behavior, he realized he needed to change. BGC South Vancouver Island’s New Dimensions program became a pivotal moment, providing a safe space and supportive environment where he could rebuild his life. With our program staff guidance, James found employment and eventually kicked his drug habit, reclaiming control over his future.
Today, James is not only a successful tradesman, but also a foster parent, giving back to youth who, like him, once felt lost. He also is an author of the book “Delinquent: A True Story About Homelessness, Foster Care, and Addiction” which he was motivated to write and self publish with the purpose to inspire the next generation of youth and community members. His story is a powerful testament to the transformative power of care, guidance, and second chances that BGC South Vancouver Island offers.
